Poll for the New Recognized Chess Variant of Summer 2005

This poll is for adding a new game to our list of recognized chess variants. It will be the new addition for the summer season of 2005. The winner of this poll will be added to the list, and it will subsequently become a candidate in polls for selecting the recognized variant of the month. The winner of the 44 squares contest has been added to the list of candidates, and the lowest ranking five from the Summer poll have been eliminated as candidates. With the current candidate list at 17, I propose to drop the lowest ranked game in this poll from subsequent polls. Here are the candidates:

Courier Chess

This game is an interesting look at the historical development of the modern game of chess, as it includes both the archaic and modern forms of the bishop, and contains the Ferz rather than a modern Queen, thus suggesting that the modern Bishop's move was 'invented' first. In addition, according to these pages' entry for the game, the game was played widely throughout Germany during the Middle Ages, although it later died out (in favor of the modern game, I would assume). The game is very playable and would make a sensible addition to the Recognized list, in my opinion. -- Jared B. McComb

Crazyhouse

Crazyhouse can be played at the four major online chess servers (ICC, FICS, US ChessLive, Chess.net) and has been available at each of the above sites for many years. It is extremely popular at each site and is an excellent game and deserves to be mentioned. -- Ed Collins

Dark Chess

This chess variant can be played on 3 game servers (BrainKing, SchemingMind and ItsYourTurn) and is a quite popular. I personally consider it the best chess variant with incomplete information, with elegant rules and more interesting to play then Kriegspiel. -- Andreas Kaufmann.
