Mega House Hexagonal Chess (MHH Chess)
A quick look at hexagonal chess already had me coming up with idea on how to implement fairy chess onto the board. Searching through the chess variants page brought me to Full house hexagonal chess, a unique hexagonal chess with very unorthodox fairy pieces, which made me wonder what would it looks like with more regular fairy pieces included?
Setup
Pieces
There are 4 new pieces, making a total of 17: The Wazir (W): is a hexagonal version of the wazir piece from certain chess variants; the Archbishop (A): is a hex version of the archbishop in capablanca, which moves like a bishop or knight; the Chancellor (C): is a hex version of the chancellor from capablanca, which moves like a rook or knight; the Amazon (Z): is a combination of the hex queen and knight, and based off a well known piece used in fairy chess. Pawns, upon reaching the final rank can promote to any piece in the starting position (along with the queen), except a king or pawn, though underpromotions may be rare excluding avoiding stalemates.
Wazir moves:
Archbishop moves:
Chancellor moves:
Amazon moves:
Quite intimidating of a piece.
Rules
This variant follows the same rules as Glinski's hexagonal chess, unless stated otherwise.
Piece moves are the exact same as Full house, except for new pieces.
Stalemates are once again a draw, as the mobility of the king now pales in comparison to the the power of the extra pieces.
Further rule additions may require deeper study of the game.
Notes
With the interest of hexagonal chess variants deeply in mind, I originally had the idea of coding an interactive, and much more viable program for playing hex chess, including variants. It was during this period, that I decided I wanted to view the true freedom of limitless board sizes, and piece move sets, in which I have decided to explore some incredible variants that branch far from the familiarity of regular chess, and even hexagon chess..
In my software version, instead of the current piece labels, I replaced missionary with "I" instead of "M", where "M" is used for chancellor, "C" for archbishop, and "A" for amazon. Wazir still uses "W" in the program.
I also had a different approach to piece values, however still very similar to those previously mentioned in Full house. For the new pieces, I would say that W=2, A=7.5, C=10, and A=13. The difference for piece values from Full house, are that I would switch hippo to 6 (originally I thought 5 points would be sensible, however the hippo is actually extremely effective at defense with its moveset, so I gave it an extra point), pegasus to 5 (due to its long range sort of being a hindrance, making it very easily targettable by lower valued pieces), hydra to 9.5 (due to its chess equivalent (WFNAH) moveset being similar to a 5x5 area mover, valued at ever so slightly less than a queen in 8x8), and unicorn to 11 (hard to calculate, its immaculate ability to target any piece from a distance is balanced out by its value being the second highest, only topped by the all-powerful amazon)
Using the original calculations, wazir would be estimatable at a value of K/2=2, archbishop would be B+N+P=8, chancellor would be R+N+P=10, and amazon would be Q+N+P=14. Unbelievably, the wazir's value could at be put into consideration. The nimble 6 space mover could be given a value of 3, equal to the bishop, due massively improved effectiveness of its moves, especially when defending pawns, as it now has 3 forward-facing moves, instead of 1.
Another part is that the sailor's value could be reduced to 7, because the difference between a bishop and missionary is much higher, due to the added ability to access all spaces, instead of just 1/3 of the board. This maybe be balanced out later in larger board variants containing "water walls" which do not let pieces through, but can be jumped over, or "sailed through" by sailors, improving the sailor's value.
