As this variant features pieces commonly known (in games which also have the standard Bishop and Knight) as the Cardinal and Gnu, an alternative name for it could be 'Cardinal Gnu-man Chess'! Regarding major and minor pieces the standard distinction (at least in 2d Chess) is whether the piece can checkmate assisted only by its own King. The Rook can still do that in this variant, and so is a major piece.
