Did you mean Shatranj of Troy?
I deleted tchervenkov-jejujeju-2007-316-504.php and penswift-carlos-2007-316-529.php.

Gary Gifford wrote on Wed, Nov 14, 2007 02:29 AM UTC:
I made a move in Shatranj of Troy - I see the game was deleted... Why are games being deleted? Is it because some players dropped out? But that game was with Carlos Carlos, I thought.

carlos carlos wrote on Wed, Nov 14, 2007 10:24 AM UTC:
yeah, i meant shatranj of troy.

gary, i messed up the time settings. when i saw that game this morning, i had about 18 hours on the clock!

abdul, i guess it's the same either way. either everybody gets a win against bogot, or nobody does.

carlos carlos wrote on Thu, Nov 15, 2007 03:15 AM UTC:
sorry, antoine. the shatranj of troy games are wrong again. i'm pretty sure i entered correct time settings this time, maybe not. i'll just use the default ones i guess.

can you delete them again?

Antoine Fourrière wrote on Thu, Nov 15, 2007 11:44 AM UTC:
I pasted
$sparetime = '1209600';
$gracetime = '86400';
$extratime = '28800';
$bonusperiod = '86400';
$bonustime = '21600';
$pacefreq = '4';
$paceperiod = '604800';
in both logs.
Are they working now?

carlos carlos wrote on Thu, Nov 15, 2007 01:09 PM UTC:
i'm not sure. i moved, but i don't think the time controls have changed?

Antoine Fourrière wrote on Thu, Nov 15, 2007 02:33 PM UTC:
No, it didn't work. I've now corrected the round file which presumably kept bringing back the wrong values after each move.

carlos carlos wrote on Fri, Nov 16, 2007 12:34 AM UTC:
looks good now, thanks!

i just read joe's comment about the email notifications. how long has this been happening? (i didn't notice because the email address i use is different from the one chessvariants sends out to, i've always just checked the site.)

is it the reason a few tournament games have been lost on time recently?

if so, what should we do about it? it seems fair to replay any games lost on time for this reason...

Joe Joyce wrote on Sun, Nov 25, 2007 01:22 PM UTC:
Hey, Carlos. I don't know what, if anything we should do about tourney games lost on time, but I do know that we need a programmer to take a look at Game Courier and fix the problems, and that's a problem, as Fergus is apparently no longer active. However, this site needs a way to repair [or replace] Game Courier even in the absence of its creator.

So we have 2 problems. The short-term one, time losses in the tourney, is minor, and might be looked at as what is more unfair, letting people who ran out of time lose on time, or taking away peoples' wins, and making them re-play the games... [ ;-) ] But the second problem, site programming maintenance, is serious and needs to be solved if we want to have a site. If Game Courier or any other part of the system breaks, how do we fix it?

Edit: I've noticed the problem with notifications for about a month.

Running a 'last 90 days' search will show that some people here have intermittent internet connections. I don't think the auto-email failure has been a major factor in tournament game forfeits. My [2007-10-26] comment on the PBM page reads:

WARNING: recently some game moves have not resulted in an email being sent out. For example, Gary Gifford's move 17 hours ago in our game and my move 24 hours ago:

'Your move has been logged.

Failed to send email to abdulrahmansibahi---. try again later.'

new games assigned...

do me a favor and check colors, opponents, time controls of your games...

antoine, there is one weird game i just saw which hasn't seen a move in 44 days, yet nobody has timed out? any ideas about that one?

Thanks for all your work.

I have seen games in the past that did not show a time forfeit until after a (late) move was made. The game now has a result logged, but the [Time Left] number is negative:

44 days, 23 hours ago Uri Bruck has won. -2539720

i just assigned several games.

there needs to be some kind of decision on the players who keep timing out. the tournament is almost finished. at the moment, i count 11 active players in the tournament:

antoine fourriere
adrian alvarez de la campa
carlos carlos
david paulowich
gary gifford
je ju
joe joyce
juan rodriguez
michael schmahl
todor tchervenkov
uri bruck

i don't want to spend time assigning all the games that never get played. how about... if anyone who is inactive reads this and wants to keep playing in the tournament they post here within the next couple of weeks and i'll assign all their remaining games? any other ideas/solutions?

if it's just the eleven players, there are only the following games that still have to be assigned once players become free:

david paulowich - joe joyce
joe joyce - michael schmahl
michael schmahl - uri bruck

i will assign these as other games finish.

also... antoine fourriere-todor tchervenkov (i can't find the glinski preset!)

finally... last year i accidentally assigned a mir chess 32 game between michael schmahl and greg strong. that game was never meant to be played (greg never moved and lost on time). michael was supposed to play mir chess 32 with gary gifford and that game is now active.

good luck!

Joe Joyce wrote on Thu, Jan 31, 2008 02:37 PM UTC:
Hey, carlos - you gave je ju and I 14 hours of reserve, not 14 days - this is liable to be a fast game of Capa Random! Is this a mistake, or just your way of hurrying the tourney along? :-)
Eagerly awaiting your answer...

Gary Gifford wrote on Thu, Jan 31, 2008 05:28 PM UTC:
Since those who don't play time out and lose, and since many have gotten a point from those non-players, then it seems only fair that the players yet to play them should also be elgible for their free 'time-out' point. It is certainly unfortunate that some have signed up, yet do not play. But in all fairness I believe it is only proper to keep assigning them and allowing them to time out.

carlos carlos wrote on Fri, Feb 1, 2008 12:04 AM UTC:
gary,

this is what i was thinking: if the lost players don't confirm an interest within two weeks, they forfeit all their remaining games.

carlos carlos wrote on Fri, Feb 1, 2008 12:06 AM UTC:
joe,

i'm sick of you holding up the tournament with your slow-play!

only kidding. if you both make your first move, that should give antoine enough time to see this and change the time settings on the game...

Joe Joyce wrote on Fri, Feb 1, 2008 05:03 AM UTC:
Okay, carlos, I'll try to finish all my games in under 10 moves.

Anybody want to resign now?

Enjoy,
        :-)

je ju wrote on Fri, Feb 1, 2008 10:05 AM UTC:
Great!! Just what I need, an extra motivated Joe Joyce to dismantle me in under 10 moves.

Thanks, Carlos.

Really.

Thanks.

Antoine Fourrière wrote on Fri, Feb 1, 2008 04:07 PM UTC:
I modified the time settings, but if it doesn't work, I won't be available before Monday (and before I'm getting my new Internet connection, so there's no guarantee).

antoine, thanks. i noticed that there is another game with the same problem. adrian-mschmahl-2008-30-525
