I meant to say this already, Gary Gifford, last year's champion, said he's in.

Antoine Fourrière wrote on Sun, Aug 19, 2007 12:01 PM UTC:
Ok, I'm in.

Jeremy Good wrote on Sun, Aug 19, 2007 12:25 PM UTC:
Among the remaining ?'s, I have tried to email John Kipling Lewis, Nasmichael Ferris and Calvin Pomerantz without success. I don't expect them to play [Added note: Turns out I was wrong about John Kipling Lewis] because for one thing, Nasmichael Ferris didn't make a single move in his first game (of Alice Chess) and therefore Sam Trenholme won on time. Calvin Pomerantz played six moves of his tournament game of Anti-King Chess II and then Michael Schmahl won on time. John Kipling Lewis stopped playing his tournament game of Korean Chess after move 3, and lost on time to Gary Gifford.

I have asked someone (Je Ju) to confer with Juan Rodriguez about whether he intends to continue playing. I suspect he will.

I have tried to write to 'Bogot Bogot', but the email had bounced. He did successfully complete a short game against Abdul-Rahman Sibahi in his first tournament game. I don't think we can count him out of this tournament necessarily yet though. Bogot Bogot's presence here has been highly sporadic lately and I worry about him and miss his playing presence here. He is a good sport and so willing to try many different games. Hopefully he is just taking a hiatus, but maybe his internet access is spotty and hopefully nothing worse. [I would send Bogot Bogot an invite for his next game and just hope he shows up at some point. Since he actually completed his first game, it's only fair to assume that he's still participating.]

Nobody has heard anything from Fergus Duniho to my knowledge. Fergus, a great chess variant inventor and creator of the PBM Game Courier system, was running this tournament but he delayed the start quite a bit and then lost on time in his first tournament game.

I have not made any effort to contact Todor Tchervenkov but since he completed and (I think) won his first tournament game, I think we shouldn't count him out unless we hear otherwise.

Jeremy Good wrote on Sun, Aug 19, 2007 12:43 PM UTC:
I expect I will hear soon from Michael Schmahl whom I expect likely to continue playing in it. If he had already told me of his intention, then I forgot about it.

John Kipling Lewis tells me he's still in.

Per Jeremy's request, I have conferred with Juan Rodriguez. He is in.

At this point, it looks like we'll have about 15 players, and I think it'd be morally wrong to jerk people around this way and then not have the tournament... Carlos, would you do the honors?

Carlos, would you do the honors?'

If these games are being assigned one-at-a-time by Carlos, then he can continue this tournament by assigning games between the 'IN' players and simply ignoring the 'OUT' players. One way to check out the '?' players would be to assign each of them a game and drop anyone who forfeits on time from the remainder of the tournament. Speaking of forfeits, no tournament here has ever been 'officially' rated (check the ratings page for Alice Chess).

Reminder: Game Filter * and Tournament Filter *III on the Game Courier Ratings page will list the players by 'rating', which (mostly) places them in order of points scored. Reminder: clicking the [Ratings] button on any game you are looking at will take you to the GCR page.

how about this?

i'll get two games going for everyone (except sam and fergus) after work today. i'll use the same time controls we used for round 1, and the games will be rated.

is that cool?

je ju wrote on Mon, Aug 20, 2007 11:08 PM UTC:
...very cool...

Joe Joyce wrote on Tue, Aug 21, 2007 12:32 AM UTC:
Great for the games, not so great for the ratings. The first game for everyone was not rated. We probably shouldn't make the rest rated, the disruptive potential is too high. We can pull the tourney ratings anyway, apparently, or will we be able to pull up all the ratings as the games go on?

carlos carlos wrote on Tue, Aug 21, 2007 05:23 AM UTC:
sorry, wasn't following the discussion about ratings properly.

carlos carlos wrote on Tue, Aug 21, 2007 05:41 AM UTC:
i just assigned the game between adrian and sam as a test to see if it would come up under the right filters when you search on the logs page and the ratings page. this seemed to work. i know that sam is not playing anymore. if adrian moves, sam will presumably time out and it will be logged as a victory for adrian. sorry, sam, for the automatic loss. i'm sure you don't mind too much.

carlos carlos wrote on Tue, Aug 21, 2007 05:48 AM UTC:
joe/david/whoever,

the ratings page is a good way to keep track of results. however... joe has a victory over fergus. everyone else gains a victory over fergus by default (right?). but these victories won't show up on the logs page (they will never be played/won). there might be more examples of this if any of the question marks don't compete from round 2 on.

assigning a bunch of dead games (like the one i just assigned between adrian and sam) doesn't seem like a good answer because those players would lose all the games for the (unofficial) ratings page if they ever return. also a waste of time, although it's doable.

does anyone know how to get into this 'game courier tournament #3' page and color in the squares in the chart from time to time to keep it updated?

other solutions? just wait till the end?

reminder for people playing avalanche chess:

White has a large advantage. White's advantage is reduced in BALANCED AVALANCHE CHESS in which White had no pawn push on the first move.

carlos carlos wrote on Tue, Aug 21, 2007 06:49 AM UTC:
ok, i think i have assigned everyone two games except:

todor tchervenkov
calvin pomerantz
bogot bogot
nasmichael farris

you four have one game each. if you move, i'll assign you another game.

there's a bunch of anti-king and avalanche chess games, and then a mix to try and get everyone playing two games at once.

please double-check that i assigned white to the correct player in your games.

note: having no idea what fergus used when tagging the rounds (when defining a new round) i just called them 1,2,3... in order from top to bottom as they appear on the chart on this page.

Jeremy Good wrote on Tue, Aug 21, 2007 08:13 AM UTC:
Well, since Todor has already made a move, you can send him an assignment for a second game...

Antoine Fourrière wrote on Tue, Aug 21, 2007 11:03 AM UTC:
I have updated the win-loss-draw-active section.

Antoine Fourrière wrote on Tue, Aug 21, 2007 12:04 PM UTC:
So, do we play Avalanche Chess or Balanced Avalanche Chess? I would suggest the latter.

Jeremy Good wrote on Tue, Aug 21, 2007 01:02 PM UTC:
Balanced. If any White player made two moves initially, black should play pass and demand White go back and play just one move.

Jeremy Good wrote on Tue, Aug 21, 2007 01:07 PM UTC:
Please also note that Greg Strong and I have elected to play Modern Shatranj instead of Cannons of Chesstonia to which we were assigned (Fergus mentioned that 'If you and your opponent for a particular game are both not playing another game, and you both would prefer to play that other game, you may switch.')

Joe Joyce wrote on Tue, Aug 21, 2007 02:06 PM UTC:
Thank you to everyone for getting this tournament going again. Congratulations, and a round of applause for all.
