So if you would give one side all pieces with the most forward moves, it would be a quite uneven battle. Of course you could still give both sides mirrored (or rather, non-mirrored) versions of the same pieces, but put some of the 'forward' versions in one army, and the others in the other army, and acheive balance that way.
