It could be that in some games the player to move hasn't checked frequently to see whether the site is back up.
As for the emails, I can't speak for others, but I've received the notifications of my opponents' moves only inconsistently throughout the summer.
fergus, my game with greg strong hasn't been given any extra time. i'm not sure when the site first went on the blink, but i am pretty sure i would have had time remaining on it. i just logged in and it says i have less than zero seconds remaining.
You won't see your extra grace time until you move. When you initially look at your game, the amount of time given in inaccurate.
Is there any way a 'button' could be added to the module that allows people to view the game logs from start to finish, more or less automatically? I was wondering if there was a simple, easy way of watching a game log play itself out automatically, assuming the user types in the point at which it begins? For instance, when I go to the implementation of Ultima (i.e., Baroque), I always choose the kind of pieces I want to look at, and then I always have to click 'VIEW' to translate the board into something that makes sense to me. It would be nice if there were a button that said 'VIEW CONTINUOUS' (with user-definable pauses inbetween moves) so I could watch the whole game play itself out automatically. But if 'VIEW CONTINUOUS' takes too much room to display on the screen, how about 'MOVIE' for an auto-play-out option?
Fergus, there is a problem with some game logs that Carlos Cetina and I have noticed. When we try to move, we get this error message: ILLEGAL: b b8-b7 on turn 4: There was no b on b8. The piece on b8 is a r. Go back and try again. It's happening in this game: sissa-joejoyce-2008-355-896 and Carlos can provide others.
Fergus, Joe,

The Fischer Random logs have blown up. Completed games, when you look, show errors on moves and tell you to go back and try the move again.
Can anyone re-enable the feature that allows one to go back and move differently at a previous phase of the game? That feature appears to be broken but certain games require it and it's helpful for times when someone makes an illegal move and one wants to correct it and continue to use proper numbers for notation.
I second that, if it can be done. I've gotten a few inquiries about that missing feature. It's touches like that which have made Game Courier such a fine piece of software. People talk about how important and useful Zillions is to game designers. In a strategic sense, I think Game Courier is better, because it is so much more flexible. Admittedly, you have to get a real intelligence to play against, rather than an artificial one, but that is not always a bad thing.
Spartan Chess Preset Request short version Is there anyone out there who can help me create a preset for Spartan Chess?
Spartan Chess Preset Request long version I have just begun reading about how to create a preset and intend to create robust one for Spartan Chess. Joe Joyce has already developed a non-rules-enforcing preset for Spartan Chess and we are new playing a game. So I have the following steps in mind. Step 1: Have Joe Joyce walk me through what he has already done for Spartan Chess (which he has agreed to do). Step 2: Create one or more new graphics including that for the Lieutenant. Step 3: Upload the Graphics and create or extend and existing piece set. Step 4: Enter rules so that the game of Spartan Chess plays properly. I think I pretty much have to do it all; create a custom piece or two, create or extend piece set and write a set of rules for the game of Spartan Chess. I imagine that for #4 the place to start would be with the Set of rules for Western set and then modify them to enforce Spartan rules for the Black side. I imagine that it will be a good deal of work with a steep learning curve for me. Is there anyone out there who as some experience with creating a preset who might be able to give me some assistance?
Steven, I'll try to help you... Your excellent game is definitely worthy of support. (Just finished getting my butt kicked in H.G.'s computer Spartan tournament.) I understood how to make rule-enforcing presets, but it's been a few years since I've messed with it. I'm pretty sure this won't be too hard. Thankfully, no en passant :) It's almost the opposite of writing a computer chess program though. Instead of looking at a position and determining a list of legal moves from that position, with game courier you present the position to the user, let him do something with the pieces, and then you decide if what he did is ok. Edit the game courier preset for orthodox chess and take a look at the code and see if it makes any sense to you. If not, I can probably just do it for you.
Is it possible to add 2 things to Game Courier: - variable time controls for players as a handicapping mechanism; - a way to publicly indicate you will trade games with other people when you offer an open invite?
