There is a fairly obvious further variant: COMBINING Recycle Chess with Hostage Chess. Enemy captures would go to prison until swapped, friendly captures would go straight to reserve. What does anyone think of that idea?
I think that Recycle Chess is now being played *with* promotions (I have always played it and seen it played that way). At least I composed an endgame study based on promotions together with the author and he didn't object :-)
Sorry for my stupid remark but what would happen if I take my own king and I don't drop it back in the game later ?
That's not a stupid remark. There appears to be an oversight in the rules concerning what to do with Kings. Some possibilities are (a) You may not capture your own King, (b) You may not drop other pieces when you have your King in hand, or (c) Your opponent will have to force you to drop your own King by capturing the rest of your pieces or otherwise creating a situation that is best remedied by dropping your King.
I think the most natural rule is that you can't capture your own king. This is a rule used on BrainKing.com (see http://brainking.com/en/GameRules?tp=98). The game is really fun to play!
Other possibility of kings: (d) If you have king in hand you are not allowed to move pieces which are on the board. (e) If you have king in hand you must drop it on any turn if you are able to do so.
Another rule, if you want to use, is: Not escape check by capturing your own king.
We play this game in our chess club in New York, with the following modifications: 1) the game commences with a minimum of three normal moves, 2) you can only have a maximum of three pieces -- including pawns -- in hand at any given time, 3) there are promotions, and 4) the king cannot escape check by capturing a friendly piece.
