Ok, this is definitely interesting... I really cannot picture how it would play, but would be interested to try. This game surely has a bizarre kind of leveling effect. The combination pieces, normally worth more, are worth less in the sense that they can be captured and the player gets pieces of equal mobility in compensation. Of course, a seperate rook and bishop is worth less than a Queen, etc., but in this game it might actually be preferable to lose a Queen rather than losing a Knight. I will probably whip up a Game Courier preset so I can try this one ...
One small criticism ... Your names 'Cardinal' and 'Chancellor' ... Normally it is either 'Archbishop' and 'Chancellor' (as in Capablanca Chess) or 'Cardinal' and 'Marshall' (as in Grand Chess). The problem with the combination of 'Cardinal' and 'Chancellor' is that that both begin with 'C' making notation more problematic.
Oh, yes. I actually intended to use 'Archbishop' rather than 'Cardinal'. Thanks for pointing that out.
I am very curious to see the ongoing game in the Courier System, I have not a clear idea about the game play, but I guess it may be very interesting, rich in possibilities, undoubtely deep and ...complex!.
I made preset for this: http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game%3DMitosis+Chess%26settings%3DMitosis+Chess I was thinking about game on standart board with standart rules and queens replaced bishops, archbishops replaced knights, marshals replaced rooks (possible to castle) and general replaced queen, but it was'nt very original, this game is better.
What happen if you lost your king, and then you promote or you earn additional rook/knight/bishop in your base squares? One possibility is ignore it and allow it to happen anyways, one possibility is make it so the pieces are lost immediately when the pawn promotes or the other pieces are captured, but one more possibility is that the king is re-added onto a vacant space in the first row (1 for white, 9 for black), which provides you with an extra piece, but will still become vulnerable. This new king does not score any points. Next question: Which of these three ways works best?
Interesting that Daniil Frolov's reaction to the potential 8x8 game that he describes is that it is unoriginal. My own not-that-old Overkill Chess uses that array, but without all the 'returning-in-bits' aspect. Before posting it I made a check that no other game used the same array, but I did not think to check for similar ideas on larger boards.
