The easiest way to implement the drop rule would be by playing with Shogi
pieces. Did you consider more than one possibility for the short-range
version of the Cannon? My own idea for short-range hopping pieces is that
they move exactly two spaces, giving one intermediate cell which must be
occupied when capturing - the Musket (hopping Dabbaba) and Spear (hopping

It's something more original, but such games also already exists. What about game, where new pieces can be made, but they are short-range if created not properly? I have one such game, i'll post it soon, but it's based on FIDE chess, it's rules will be complicated if i'll try to use them for Xiang-qi. Maybe simple FIDE chess with cannons (like Eurasian ches)?
