Game Courier. PHP script for playing Chess variants online.[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

Kriegspiel cannot be supported by Game Courier, because Game Courier cannot handle the kind of hidden information used in Kriegspiel. To add a game, write a preset for it, then contact an editor. Details on writing presets are given in the Developer's Guide. It is now possible to write presets that enforce rules, but it requires programming.

This was suppose to address Shanghai Palace Chess- somehow it went to the wrong subject heading.... Anyway, in Regard to Shanghai Palace Chess's game courier, I don't think that the courier change buys us much. Now, for example, if the player with Red looks at Blue's Shogi pieces he will still have to mentally flip the vectors. The Silver is the most likely to be confused since it looks like it can go back one space instead of forward one. I imagaine the Blue player will have the same problem. L. Lynn Smith might have a solution as he handled this problem in his ZRF. Meanwhile, I am checking on having a Shanghai Palace Chess tournament. I have a nice trophy picked out. Should the event be approved I will post more information regarding it and the intended prize. It is probably best that the courier 'flip situation' get resolved before any tournament would get started. Best regards to all...

Beautiful board and pieces!

(Motif Shogi pieces and light board). Beautiful

It seems that the pieces are not properly aligned in the squares.

Concerning Storm the Ivory Tower:
There is a problem with the pieces. For example, at the beginning, the
square c9 contains 3/4 of a Blue Dumbo and 1/2 of a Blue Toady.
This problem can be solved by making the squares smaller, but I'm not
sure if that would result in the arrows being blurred.

For the new Fusion Chess, it does not recognize Pawns.

the board is too small.

The previous comment lacks context. Boards will resize with different piece sets. Smaller boards are generated for smaller pieces, while larger boards are generated for larger pieces.

For a recorded game of Shogi, when I clicked the View button, it took me to the standard viewing preset for Chess.

Please don't omit important details when describing bugs. What Shogi game are you talking about? What is the URL for the game?

Greg Strong wrote on Sat, Nov 27, 2004 05:29 PM UTC:
The code to enforce the rules in standard Chess is missing the lines that
prevent a pawn from capturing directly forward...

🕸💡📝Fergus Duniho wrote on Sat, Nov 27, 2004 09:09 PM UTC:
Thanks for pointing that out. It is now fixed in the Chess presets. Based on examination of my Anatomy of a Preset page and my Grotesque Chess preset, it appears that I originally had the code and somehow accidently deleted it recently. But since I just changed how I do it in the presets, I'll update the Anatomy page to reflect the new code.

When I attempt to access this game log, I get an error... Log:
http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Anti-King+Chess+II&log=andreas-cvgameroom-2003-300-130

Error:
Game Courier Warning: resigned is not a valid move, because resigned is
not a recognized command, and it lacks any recognized operator.

It says it's just a warning, but it keeps me from seeing any of the game.

Then warning might be the wrong word. Resigned is not a valid command. The command you want to use is resign.

Greg Strong wrote on Wed, Dec 1, 2004 12:45 AM UTC:
I am not entering a command. I am just trying to look at a game that has finished, and it will not let me look at it.

It might be an old game that was played before commands were introduced into Game Courier. Which game is it?

Greg Strong wrote on Wed, Dec 1, 2004 01:01 AM UTC:
<p>I was looking through the game logs for Anti-King Chess II (trying to study up, you know), and there are two seperate games that had the same error:</p> <p><a href='http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Anti-King+Chess+II&log=andreas-cvgameroom-2003-256-887'>http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Anti-King+Chess+II&log=andreas-cvgameroom-2003-256-887</a><br>and<br><a href='http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Anti-King+Chess+II&log=andreas-cvgameroom-2003-300-130'>http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game=Anti-King+Chess+II&log=andreas-cvgameroom-2003-300-130</a></p> <p>Probably the logs are old, but it would be nice if I could see at least the part of the log up until the bad command.</p>

🕸💡📝Fergus Duniho wrote on Wed, Dec 1, 2004 01:20 AM UTC:
I just made 'resigned' a synonym for 'resign' and both of those games can be viewed now.

Greg Strong wrote on Wed, Dec 1, 2004 01:29 AM UTC:
yup. Excellent, thank you! Both look like interesting games, too.

I have fixed some bugs in the JavaScript code for updating the form in Edit mode. When you change the Set Group field, it is supposed to update the Set field. When you change the Shape field or the Render as field, various rows of the form are supposed to appear or disappear, so that you get only those rows that apply to the shape and rendering method you have selected. The JavaScript is also supposed to keep you from choosing unsupported combinations of shape and rendering method. Anyway, this code wasn't working, because some bugs had crept into the JavaScript code. But now it's fixed and working again.
