Unusual pieces have been found in an old chess set belonging to greatgrandfather. A rook plus a bishop, a rook plus a knight - also nine pawns per side. Could this be a variant game.
Hnefatafl pieces have been found in two places associated with Lewis Carroll: jet ones in Warrington, place of his birth and childhood, and bone ones in Oxfordshire, where he spent his working life.
