I think we need a volunteer team of top level programmers who would work with Fergus Duniho to make your dream a reality

My position in our game of Janus Chess has grown desparate and almost indefensible. My armies are weary and wilst need to regroupe for several days to determine a proper course of action. I regret that Janus Chess is the only variety you appear to play, for there are many other variants here that you could be enjoying presently. I will send word hither when I have finished contemplating my next move.

in the end game of regular chess, if one player has a king and queen, and the other a king and knight, is this a draw?

Stephen Stockman wrote on Sun, Oct 8, 2006 03:18 AM UTC:Excellent ★★★★★
the beauty of the game was that i thought i was losing at some point

David Paulowich wrote on Sun, Oct 8, 2006 11:56 AM UTC:
Stephen: a Queen should beat any single piece in chess, but even masters have difficulty winning the endgame K+Q versus K+R.

Thanks for the Info.

Can anyone find Pete Cox's email address, he started a game with me but
he still has to make the first move. Fergus, can u help with this, this is
the second time this has happened to me with a new player.

PETE COX, if you see this plz return to our game and make your first move

It would be remiss of me to post his address here, since that would make it available to spammers. But you should already have his email address in your inbox. When he accepted your invitation, you should have gotten an email about this, and his address should be in the From field.

There is an error in the short rules description for Chu Shogi. The Reverse Chariot promotes to a Whale (which is correct), but a Whale moves orthogonally forwards or backwards, or diagonally backwards. Thus, the piece icon is correct, but the text description is wrong. Similarly for White Horse (promoted Lance).

I changed my password Sunday - and now nothing works. Perhaps I mistyped it. I will be sending an email to the editors asking for a temporary password.

I should stop changing my password when I am tired - looks like I mistyped it. I will be sending an email to the editors asking for a temporary password.

I've known myself to do similar things. Just sent you a temporary password.

Gave you a new temporary password David. Good luck. :-)

I just noticed a time discrepancy in the Game Courier 'time remaining' column for the tournament game of Templar Gary Gifford and I are playing. My actual time left is 18 days, yet GC now shows 28 days, though it was correct before today.

We've obviously got a bug in Game Courier, a very minor but nasty one that can cause people to lose games by default. Everyone playing timed games should be aware of this bug, and look at their games for time remaining, not rely on GC's time remaining feature.

David Paulowich wrote on Fri, Oct 26, 2007 12:30 PM UTC:

The 'extra ten days bug' shows up from time to time. WARNING: recently some game moves have not resulted in an email being sent out. For example, Gary Gifford's move 17 hours ago in our game and my move 24 hours ago:

'Your move has been logged.

Failed to send email to abdulrahmansibahi---. try again later.'

Joe Joyce wrote on Thu, Nov 22, 2007 03:57 PM UTC:
The move notification system seems to be dead. I am getting no notification that it's my turn in any active games, tournament or otherwise, so I assume no one else is, either. This could cause problems for anyone who depends on email for game turns. For example, Juan Rodriguez is halfway to timing out on a 3 week turn in our game of Chieftain. And while I like winning, the point is to actually play some of these games. Can anything be done, other than frequently posting:
CHECK THE GAME COURIER LOGS FOR YOUR ACTIVE GAMES - IT'S PROBABLY YOUR TURN!

Statistics. In 'Finished Games' for all 4 years of the Game Courier, counted quickly by hand so being within +/-2, there are: *Shogi* 200, *FRC* 80, Pocket Mutation 62, *Xiangqi* 52, **Chess** 40, CDA (36+4)= 40, Moderate Progressive 35, 4-Way 30, Ultima 29, Falcon Chess (23+2)= 25, Rococo (18+6)= 24, Alice 24, Chu Shogi 24, Shatranj 23, Grand 21, Anti-King 21, Omega 20...(They start bunching up near 20 decisive.) Maybe Moderate Progressive, 4-Way, Ultima, and Falcon Chess each show not so valid number because of specialists Stephen Stockman, Stephen Stockman, Matthew Montchalin, and George Duke respectively playing most of theirs completed. The first real variant, Pocket Mutation, would reach 300 game scores after 20 years at the rate. Only 300 games of P.M. or Rococo after supposed 12 or 20 years would not really establish that serious opening repertoires yet. However, Ultima's several hundred eventually might amplify other sources' records of Ultima games back to 1960's. And Alice may have small inventory of old ones too to add together. Of course, *FRC* has tens of thousands, and *Shogi*, Xiangqi, and Chess so many millions that the 100 or 1000 more generating here the first quarter century do not matter much. Those four games'(all hundreds years old) openings, and novelties, would tend to repeat thematically, if only rarely exact positions after 11 to 15 moves. Even FRC(Fischer's 1996 announcement the latest update of invention actually out of the 1820's) from differing initial arrays occasionally reaches positions already known -- exactly the same as another score's previously played and analyzed from that point. (In FRC itself, merely transposing Queen and King, or Bishop and Rook surprisingly devolves once in a while to the same-positioned game (of Chess or FRC) after some 8/12/16 moves, it has been found.)

George Duke's comment reminded me some facts I dug up for the old 'Next Tournament' thread.

I ran a search on 2007-05-28 for [Finished] games that started in the calendar year 2006. Zero games of Fischer Random Chess (one game had started and finished in 2007). Shogi = 32, (FIDE) Chess = 24, Chinese Chess = 19, Pocket Mutation Chess = 16, Grand Chess = 6. These totals include games from the Chess-Xianqgi-Shogi Tournament #1. A *Shatranj* search turned up 31 games including the word 'Shatranj', mostly played by the usual suspects.
