ANNOUNCING THE 2006 WORLD CHESS VARIANT CHAMPIONSHIPS
SPONSORED BY TAURUS GAMES

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS WILL BE PLAYED IN THE FOLLOWING GAMES

4-WAY CHESS

MODERATE PROGRESSIVE CHESS

DELUXE CHESS

You may play in any one game or as many as you want. The winner of each
section will receive a chess crown, photo will be supplied soon. Any
person who plays in at least one section may add one game to the list.
Players always have the option to only play in the sections they want
to play in. The first player to win 10 games in round robin format win's
the championship for that game. You may also suggest a game to add to the
list even if your not playing any other games once you get a tournament
game underway and confirmed.

Very interesting format! I'm in! I am curious about how the time controls will be set, but I am open to any reasonable parameters (reasonable meaning that I have at least 2 days, on average, to make a move.)

I want to play in the Deluxe Chess section. Since my participation in this section allows me to suggest another game, I would like to include Joe Joyce's Grand Shatranj D, on the basis that it is both an interesting and very logical continuation of early Shatranj worthy of futher study.

OK, I will add Grand Shatranj D to the 2006 World Championship list.

Time controls are e-mail tournament speed

Start your games whenever your ready and just email with info on each game
after it begins, and write World Championship somewhere in the script of
the game

The play.php (in any mode) should output a BASE tag as well so that if you save it to your computer, it will appear correct.

I have done a temporary fix but it will stop working when this comment falls off the bottom of the page, so you need to include it directly in this page for it to work permanently.

To Mr. Duniho,

An option to have 'Diamonds' in the menu 'Shape', which are 45 degrees squares, would be nice. It's like the difference between vertical and horizontal hexagons. (I realize it can be worked around using the bkg image, but it's a nice option to have.)

Regards,

Your welcome to use Falcon there staying on 8x8, as seem to be eager. [I see the 8x8 Short Chess Preset, which may be provisional and not appear later]

We copied over this Falcon King comment not applying to Short Chess or the Play-by-Mail system itself.

There seems to be a new problem with this system when creating presets. I was trying to create this Preset for Burmese Chess by request for Armin Liebhart.

I uncheck the box Exclude Pieces not in Setup so that the pieces that need to be dropped can be added, but they never show up. So right now there is no way to play this preset because you cannot drop the pieces in.
You can see for yourself by editing the preset.

Is there someone who can help on this or has any advice?

Joe Joyce wrote on Sat, Jan 26, 2008 08:29 PM UTC:
Hey, Charles, try this:

http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game%3DBurmese+Chess%26settings%3DBurmese+Chess+1Xa

When you uncheck the exclude box, after everything else is right, save, don't update. Updating brings back the exclusion, saving doesn't.

Charles Daniel wrote on Tue, Jan 29, 2008 01:42 AM UTC:
Thanks Joe, but for some reason it does not work for me - I tried it with saving first. I don't know what I am doing wrong - I know it used to work even on update before.

David Paulowich wrote on Tue, Jan 29, 2008 03:08 AM UTC:

I have also had problems keeping that box unchecked. There is another way around this problem.

Shatranj Kamil X has promotion to a piece that is not in the initial setup. DO NOT CLICK ON THE GAME COURIER PRESET ON THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE! My original game preset, which has not yet been attached to this page, places extra pieces in the center of the board and then deletes them before the first move is made. So all of the pieces used in my game will show up in the pieces list. Clicking 'Edit this preset' to see [Pre-Game: @-e5; @-f5 ], reveals how I remove the extra pieces from e5 and f5.

[July Edit] The rules page now links to my original game preset

I created a new preset for Modern Chess:
http://play.chessvariants.org/pbm/play.php?game%3DModern+Chess%26settings%3DModern+Chess

I just discovered this variation in play in Puerto Rico while on vacation there when I played chess with some friends at a park in Manati.

Gabriel Maura invented Modern Chess in 1968, and it was last played in tournaments in 1983.

I'm looking for player to try it out. If you are interested, please send me an email. Thanks.

For the chinese chess presets (image: GB and Big5), why were the red pieces white?

I have yet to write a rules file for Rennchess II, but the only difference between I and II is the addition if the Courier, symbolized by the Templars shield, which may move exactly like the Phoenix from the Shogi Variants, that is, it may jump two squares diagonally in any direction, and step one square orthogonally in any direction. Here is a link to Rennchess I

Due to changes in GAME Code, this preset is broken and needs to be fixed. GAME Code no longer accepts user notation as programming code except when it is preceded by the keyword 'MOVE:'. This is for the sake of distinguishing user input from programming code. The lines that need to be changed empty a space by dropping an @. These can be replaced with the empty command or by preceding the notation with 'MOVE: '.

Nevertheless, my many presets still seem to work, anyway. Thanks, Fergus (I suppose) for updating my Chess256 preset.

Is it just me, did I just forget how to do it, or are we no longer able to 'travel back in time' i.e., revisit an old position in an ongoing game on Courier by going back to a previous move? If we are no longer able, then certain variants (the one that comes to mind is Time Travel Chess by Gary Gifford) are now unplayable.

Can someone help me figure out how to do that again? (I'd also like to be able to revisit positions that were overwritten and that was never an option but would make my own Time Travel Chessgi easier to play.)

Fergus,

How do we add pieces to a Game Courier graphs piece set?

I want to add two new piece graphics:

Ajax-Archbishop:

The Ajax-Archbishop moves like Bishop+Knight, plus it has one orthogonal non-capturing 'adopted' step.

Ajax-Chancellor:

The Ajax-Chancellor moves like Rook+Knight, plus it has one diagonal non-capturing 'adopted' step.

Thanks.
