Thank you for creating this site. It is very clearly written and easy to understand. Both of us are new to chess and we are learning together. Your site has been a great help.

One note: in the example game, move 15, just before black wins, it says, 'White smiles and says, 'Checkmate!'' We are not certain, but we think this should probably say, 'Black smiles...' because black is about to win.

Thanks again!

ive been playin chess for 5 years now and dont really find this page useful. So im givin it a poor rating. There should be an advanced section too.

The person who rated this as 'poor' must not have paid attention to the fact that this site was for children. Which shows how 'poor' their attention to the obvious is. Thus making them someone easy to play against and beat! We loved it and found it to be excellent for the explanation of the basics and a few of the other rules. Happy dueling!

Muchas gracias por su ayuda. I´m an English teacher. I teach English as a second language in Caracas, Venezuela. This is a wonderful site for kids... your 'simple part' is the best of it! Excelente manera de ingresar al juego para aquellos que no sabemos nada de él! ojalá pueda trabajar con mis alumnos de preescolar... GRACIAS! Keep going!!

Hey, Fergus, didn't someone (heh-heh) suggest maybe putting some more color on the front page a while back? Like maybe a few rows of the prettiest boards, maybe strung around the intro like nautical signal flags, possibly including a random selection of interesting icons?

Maybe, but the front page isn't part of my purview here.

Thanks! This is a great web site. I'll be teaching chess to 4th and 5th graders this year and I plan on having them go through your web site to reinforce the rules of the game. Your instructions and graphics are clear and easy to read.

Outstanding and comprehensive website. I've always heard chess was a hard game to learn, don't bother with it because it's too hard. Well, you've proven them all wrong and I thank you for doing so. I have always wanted to learn the game. I did through you and my son getting me started with it. I love it and thank you so very much for taking the time and effort of your work to put it on the internet. It's awesome! Sincerely, Patty

This and the rest of the site answered my questions as a rusty adult looking to help in a chess club. I could remember more than I thought but was not confident when challenged. Now I have evidence!

This was clear, simply stated and illustrated, and I can't wait to show it to some of our students who have been trying to learn how to play. I think you did a great job.

I am trying to learn the game. I just wish the automated game could be stopped so I could guess the move then continue or slow it down some. Other wise I am learning much!

I am just a parent of a 12 year old boy who expressed an interest in
learning how to play chess. I was never taught how myself and felt a bit
embarrassed about it. I found this website and I must say I was surprised
to find out how excited I was to play once I went through the steps. It
was set up in such a way, it just made it so easy to understand. I copied
off the whole thing so I could go back to it as a reference as I taught my
son as well. We have been practicing ever since...and even though we are
far from being masters, I can honestly say we both look forward to playing
this wonderful game. If it wasn't for your visual and interactive way of
presenting the rules of Chess, I would have given up on the whole thing.
I'm not a member of your organization, but I just wanted to let you know
it is because of this website that we have become avid players of chess.

It is excellent how much you visually encompass the pieces' movement, and speak as if to a child. I would recommend to all whom would enjoy in the education of Chess, nay children exclusive.
