The WD

The WD combines the powers of Wazir and Dabaaba. For example, from e4 this piece can go to e5, f4, e3, d4, e6 (even if e5 is empty), g4, e2, or c4.

This is a short-range jumping piece that is fairly close in value to the FIDE Knight. In the opening, it is a little bit weaker than the Knight, simply because its first move does not touch the center; in the midgame and endgame, who can say?

The Pawnless endgame of K plus WD versus King is a forced checkmate, if I remember correctly, although it is not easy to confine the enemy King to a corner.

Sample position: White has WD on e7 and d7, Black has Kf8, Pf7 g7 h7; White to play and mate in 3. This sample shows the WD at its best, and you can see that the WD is capable of being stronger than a Knight could ever be; but in the average position, the WD is not stronger than the Knight.

Quite possibly, the WD should be regarded as moving in fewer than 4 directions. In any case, you should compare this piece with the R2. The WD is stronger than the R2.
